CROW Feathers: Madison Kucinick

Where are you from?

"I’m originally from Fort Myers, Florida."

What is your position at CROW?

"I am a veterinary medicine externship student."

How long have you worked at CROW?

"I was working at CROW for four weeks!"

What is your favorite animal and why?

"I loved working with the pelicans. They are such a huge part of my life growing up on the beach and they all had such personalities come out while healing in the ICU. I enjoyed learning about their unique features like subcutaneous air that makes them feel like bubble-wrap. I am really happy that we had so many success stories with pelicans during my time there and I’ll always wonder if I’m seeing a former patient on the water!"

What is your favorite memory or story from your time at CROW?

"I had a lot of great moments at CROW, but my favorites were when I was able to see a patient from their first intake to when they were released back into the wild. It was very rewarding to know that our work was getting those patients healthy and out into the ecosystem as quickly as possible."

What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?

"I really enjoyed spending time with fellow students and interns after work either catching the sunset, grabbing dinner, or just hanging out and sharing stories in our kitchen. I feel lucky to have worked with the people that I did and to not only have gained a lot of practical skills but great friends as well."

What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?

"My goal as a wildlife veterinarian is to work towards the conservation of endangered species around the world through field medicine and population health."
