CROW Feathers: Jared Jackson

Where are you from?

"I am from Blythewood, SC but go to school at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine where I am going to into my third year of vet school."  

What is your position at CROW?

"I am a Veterinary Medicine Externship Student."

How long have you worked at CROW?

"I am finishing up a 4 week externship."

What is your favorite animal and why?

"My favorite animal is an elephant because they are very intelligent and wise animals. Here at CROW, one of my favorite animals are the pelicans. They are so charismatic and each one has a unique personality."

What is your favorite memory or story from your time at CROW?

"My most memorable moment during my externship was when I had the opportunity to place a feeding tube in a gopher tortoise. This was one of the top things that I wanted to do before I started this externship and it was a amazing to get the chance to do the procedure. I hope to work with reptile medicine in the future and this was a great chance to get experience with that."

What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?

"I really enjoy doing things outside like hiking and fishing but also like to watch movies and binge tv shows. On my off days at CROW, I really enjoy going to the beach and walking the trails at the JN Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. I like to try different foods wherever I go and it has been really nice to try the restaurants around the island. One of my favorite things to do has been hanging out with my fellow externs, we have gotten really close during my time here and it has been fun getting to know everyone."

What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?

"My career goal is to contribute to conservation as a veterinarian at a zoo or aquarium. I would like to hopefully complete a residency in zoological medicine in the future and become a board certified zoo vet."
